North Bristol 0 – Keynsham 54 (BJC Cup)
"And they're off"
Like racehorses stuck in the paddock the boys were itching to return to competitive rugby.
After a false start on the first weekend of the season at Gordon League we were straight into Cup rugby with our confirmed opponents being North Bristol in the first round of the Bristol Junior Cup.
Keynsham traveled with a full squad whereas North's numbers were cut to only 16 due to a sickness bug. To add to their distress we played on the wide open spaces of their first team
pitch. A more "streetwise" coach may have reviewed that generous decision.
The first half ,with several stoppages including a change of pitch due to a head injury, was a very one sided affair with Keynsham scoring six unanswered trys to race into a half time 40-0 lead.
Charlie MORRIS grabbed a first half hat trick and was joined by Kieron LEACH , Ed DRAPER and Bailey WILSHIRE on the score sheet.
Will BROOKES should also get a mention for slotting 5 conversions.
The second half continued in the same vein as despite the full squad being used and Keynsham supplying players (Lewis Button & Nathan Longhurst) to assist North for parts of the game, the momentum was still very much with Keynsham.
For North the closest they came to scoring was via a second half penalty kick. This decision very much summed up their day as a kick and attacking line out on our line would surely have been preferable.
It was left to Ben PARKER and Lewis BUTTON to put North out of their misery by scoring a try a piece. Charlie HODGES adding the conversions.
The referee called a halt to the game some 15 minutes early with the score standing at 54-0.
Overall this was a gentle introduction to the season. The whole squad got game time and we did not pick up any additional injuries. We showed that we had remembered a few of the best bits from last season with our attacking play.
The main learning point, as in the professional game , is you can not tackle or make contact with your opponent above the shoulders. We gave away three penalties in the first half. Two of them in quick succession. A more strict referee may have produced a yellow card??
Well done boys
I let the horses run freely & they were magnificent - Jose Mourinho (aka Paul Brookes)
