The Dennis Cockbaine Lottery Newsletter September 2017 Dear fellow supporters, Sincere apologies for the lack of newsletter since the start of last season. You will be aware that the first team squad secured a well deserved promotion into South West 1 League; celebrations were loud and long following the win in the last game of the season at Chosen Hill FP RFC. Pre-season saw the same structure in the Club playing contingent with team captains and coaching staff remaining in harness for the forth coming league battles, with just the one change, James Wetton taking over from Sam Williams as under 18’s coach. The club owes a big debt of gratitude to Sam for his work over the last few years in keeping that age group going and leading them gently into men’s rugby; many of his “prodigies” have featured in the first and second team selections. The 3rd XV have opted out of the league system opting for a newly created merit table, hopefully this will bring about less mis-matches and enable the players wishing to have a more social afternoon and a more enjoyable season A further attempt to play friendly games on a Friday night under lights will be undertaken, a great idea which just failed to get up and running previously – watch this space! The juniors and minis sections are still thriving thanks to a hard-working group of coaches, assistants, managers and back-room staff. Work is in progress for the installation of the new sets of floodlights on the rear pitches which also means a slight reduction in their size and should be in operation late October. This has proved to be a difficult project to manage, not least in dealing with the requirements of the local council and co-ordinating the work of three different contractors; our new Chairman Jim Brooks and Paul Brookes, a committee member with huge experience in Project Management, have born most of the pain, thanks Jim and Paul. The Dennis Cockbaine Lottery, as this fund-raiser is now named following a change of name at the last AGM, is still ticking along nicely. Since its inception in November 2011 you have helped to raise £21,000 in profit and has paid out £14,080 in prizes. Profits are ring-fenced by the committee and are only used for projects outside the normal running of the club and for the benefit of both players and spectators/supporters. The name change was brought about by many people not being aware what the Dennis Cockbaine Club was about and it is hoped that the name change will bring about an increase in membership and with it an increase in profit for the club and for the prize fund. This will be my last newsletter as Gaz Deere is taking over from me in a further effort to increase membership – nothing else changes! I’ve appended a list of recent winners below.
